Kniphofia 'LIMELIGHT' torch lily, red hot poker

Limelight is a new torch lily for the new millennium. Its dense, fat, ovate inflorescence shines like a limelight with its narrow, tubular flowers which open from lime green buds into shiny sulphur yellow flowers. Only when the complete inflorescence is open a few trumpets at the very top turn golden orange.

Stems are fleshy but strong, about 60 cm tall, and hold flowers from late July until October which makes Limelight one of the latest varieties to produce flowers. Another feature you will notice even if you are not an expert is the foliage structure. The narrow, strap-like leaves are curled inwards, very stiff so you cannot straighten them without risking damage. They are pale to medium green, non-glossy yet very handsome so even without flowers the tuft is a looker.

Torch lily is perfect for modern and exotic landscapes, and will also fit in mixed perennial borders where its vertical habit will beautifully contrast with other arching or mound forming plants. It is not ideal for growing in pots - first due to the roots, and secondly it is not very aesthetical.

Grow it in full sun only, in humus-rich, moist but well-drained soil. Fertilizing is beneficial from early summer. This variety is hardy to about -24°C if mulched, protecting the clump with a layer of fir branches is recommended for zone 6 winters. Tie up the clump before winter in order to prevent the crown from excessive moisture. Protect newly emerging stems with flower buds against slugs.
