Description of the plant:
Ninebark is a low-maintenance deciduous plant which is available in several varieties offering various leaf colours and shapes. Diabolo® is a variety with deep maroon red 3-lobed leaves, which appear early in the spring. Clusters of pink flowers are tiny but the shrub is covered with them in May.

Diabolo® is an excellent, fully hardy, deciduous plant which thanks to its colour-coded leaves highlights every composition or fills a spot where you hopelessly think about putting something less demanding. It grows a little taller than its gold-leaved brother and if you want a compact looking shrub we recommend pruning it when young. Typical system of growth is characterized by long, vertical twigs produced one year that only the next year make short lateral branches with flowers and fruits. Such branches get too heavy and bend making a very attractive, somewhat weeping appearance.

Ninebarks are so easy to grow. They take any soil, pH and location. The root system is so sturdy it can easily grow through heavy clay and provide nutrients for a fantastic plant. Diabolo® will look great grown next to other broadleaved plants with yellow or bright green foliage to provide the best contrast. Location in full sun will secure the deepest leaf colour. Pruning is not necessary but can be done in February or March. Fully hardy to -42°C (USDA zone 3).
