Weigela 'Courtacad1' BLACK AND WHITE® weigela

BLACK AND WHITE® is dwarf weigela suitable for small gardens and pots. It was bred by Luc Decourtye from France in 1987 as a cross between varieties Mansais and Foliis Purpureis. Patent No. PP22766 was issued in 2012, and in 2009 it received a Bronze Medal at the Plantarium fair introducing plant novelties.

BLACK AND WHITE® weigela produces dark olive green, shortly lance-shaped, deciduous leaves which gain deep burgundy red or almost chocolate brown hues as they mature, just before the plant begins to flower. Flowers are funnel shaped, white with purple red calyxes, and contrast perfectly with dark background of leaves. It forms a low, compact shrub only some 40 cm tall and twice as wide. Flowering starts in late May and continues for 2-3 weeks. Pruning is recommended right after flowering - by about a third or half.

Weigelas thrive in semi-fertile, slightly moist soil, preferably in full sun. They can take heavy and compacted soil, too, but will need more time to become nice and bushy. Hardy to approx. -29°C (USDA zone 5), large growing varieties are not suitable for outdoor pots (risk of drying out in winter).
