Description of the plant:
MINOR BLACK® is a sister weigela variety of MONET® weigela which was introduced in 2006 by Bert Verhoef from the Netherlands. MINOR BLACK® is also a dwarf plant, but it makes rich burgundy red, deciduous leaves in spring. In summer they change to dark olive green while the plant is making new, burgundy red leaves again. Flowers are deep purple red and appear from late May for 2-3 weeks. Weigelas can repeat flowering in late summer but if you are looking for a dense and good looking plant prune it immediately after flowering. You will probably not get any flowers in late summer but a profusion of them in the following year, and on branches that do not carry numerous unsightly seed pods.
MINOR BLACK® grows slowly into a mound-forming shrub, or can be grafted on a short stem as a mini standard. Weigelas thrive in semi-fertile, slightly moist soil, preferably in full sun. They can take heavy and compacted soil, too, but will need more time to grow nice. Hardy to about -29°C (USDA zone 5) and is often grown in outdoor pots that need to be large enough to prevent the risk of drying out in winter.
